Throughout history, people utilized various types of lines for fishing. In some cases, they used horse hair, which is known to be very resistant, while in other cases silk thread proved to be good enough. Since 1850, artificial fishing lines began to be produced in industrial amounts. In our times, the artificial fishing line is utilized all over the world. The materials from which the line is made include silk, linen and in some cases even cotton or flax, although these are used in reather seldom cases.

As it is a very common thing, the role of the fishing line may be neglected. However, without the fishing line several fishing techniques would not be possible. The fishing line realizes the connection between the fishing rod and the hook. While some techniques involve a single hook that is attached to the end of the fishing line, others, such as long-line fishing implies several hundreds or even several thousands of hooks that are attached to the line. In this situation, each of the hooks has bait attached to it, fact that increases the chances to catch fishes, but also increases considerably the amount of fish that is caught at a time.

The fishing line comes in a great number of forms. Each type is designed for a certain technique. Even more, there are certain types of lines that must be used only in salt water while others can be used only in fresh water. The fishing line is realized from materials that act in various ways in each environment.

The difference in diameter and in resistance makes some types of fishing line better than others. In the technique named fly fishing there are several types of lines used. The variety is determined by the great number of fishes that can be caught by using this type of fish bait. As the more powerful fish may try to escape, the line is connected to a inferior line at the bottom of the rod. Fly line backing is typically made from gel spun monofilaments.

For increasing the distance at which the line was cast people invented reels. These mechanisms allow fishermen to cast the line away and to retrieve it very easily. The fishing line also influences the behavior of the bait. This fact is observed especially in fly fishing. The fly is known to float on or in the water. In the third case, the fly sinks very slowly. If an appropriate type of fishing line is not used then the desired effect is not obtained.
